This workshop was with Carla O’Conner; a fantastic teacher, watermedia artist and all-around great human being.

Carla was a wealth of information about design, creating abstract shapes and shares many of her techniques and love of art.  I traveled with an artist friend from Florida, Lorraine Andrews and after the 2 week workshop, we went on to explore the  Greek Islands and I fell in love with the Minoan culture and art.Lorraine sketching in Prague  But that deserves another page.

During the Prague workshop we kept a journal and this is something I have continued to do whenever I am on a trip.   The journal is a visual record of images that I want to remember when I return to the studio and sketches made on site.  I also recorded my hotel bedrooms and views from my window.

At Kalovy Vary, there are medicinal springs.   People buy individual cups and partake of the sulfurous water (our guide advised us to skip the experience).  I sat, one day, on a bench and sketched, first the view and then did a number of quick sketches of the people gathered by one of the spring fountains.

One of Carla’s exercises was to draw a flower using only one line.   I have used this technique repeatedly and love the lines that result.   This sunflower drawing was to be done while we were transported on the bus.   We had plenty of room to take up seats, spread our stuff, and use the trays to hold the painting equipment.   Carla roamed from seat to seat and spent quality time with each of us to answer questions and offer her critique of our work.

Another exercise was to abstract the face of the person next to us, then abstract it again and then again.  I chose Lorraine.   With apologies to her, I will share my results.  Lorraine Abstracted

A number of paintings came out of me after this workshop.  When I get a chance, I will connect them to this page.

One Response to Prague and the Czech Republic

  1. WOW!!! Great job Linda!! this is a neat page and your work looks fantastic! You have really been painting free. I hope this is just the beginning of many more wonderful art trips for you. Use the ” one- liner ” technique often and in good health!
